Ron Hruska, MPA, PT

Ron with his grandsons

I am unqualified to write Ron Hruska’s career biography.  I am only his daughter, and sadly, not privy to his world of biomechanics and pathokinesiology and postural restoration.  Honestly, I’m not even sure what those words mean.  As far as his professional expertise goes, I can only attest to this: my dad has X-ray vision.  He can watch you walk or sit or stand and know exactly what is going on inside your body and how it needs to be “fixed.” Coming from his most apathetic patient ever, I’m pretty sure this means that for at least the last decade, he’s had to bite his tongue every time he watches me move.
There are hundreds, thousands probably, who can speak of his love and passion for his profession and of his dedication to helping people move and participate more fully in their own lives.  Adjacent to this devotion to others, though, there is in him the desire to fulfill the potential of his own life and embrace the goodness he himself has been given.  It means that when he is not practicing PT or teaching courses, he is, well, busy with other things.
To just list all of my dad’s hobbies is an injustice to the depth and breadth of his interest in and knowledge of them.  We call him obsessive compulsive, but passionate seems a more respectful adjective.  My dad is an arborist and a gardener.  A daVinci enthusiast and Husker volleyball fan.  A collector of Red Wing pottery, oak furniture, Tonka trucks, toy tin barns and model and full-size tractors.  A fisherman and hunter.  A wordsmith and lover of books.  And sometimes, late at night, an E-bay bidder.
Above all of this, he is a husband, dad, and most devoted grandpa.  He cannot go more than a couple of days without seeing my three boys and does everything in his power to make sure it happens.  He also fosters in them enthusiast tendencies that mirror his own wholehearted passion for partaking in pleasurable pursuits.  Once he learns of their interest in playing army, or of building with with Legos, or most recently, of their obsession with Star Wars, there will be hundreds of plastic army men and tanks or new Lego sets or Darth Vader costumes in their hands the next day.  Let’s call it what it really is – spoiling them.  I think he considers it his most important job.

Bella, Nemo and I at the lake.

Hello, my name is .  I am a staff physical therapist at the Hruska Clinic and an associate faculty member through the Postural Restoration Institute™ (PRI) .  I have been a part of the Hruska Clinic since June 2001 (click here to read my blog).  Prior to my arrival, I obtained my degree in Physical Therapy from Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.  Preceding my Physical Therapy education I spent 2 years at the University of Minnesota where I was a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer with the football team and obtained my Master of Arts in Kinesiology.  I earned my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and was a student athletic trainer with the University of Nebraska Track and Field, Baseball, and Football teams.

Throughout my education I have always had the aspiration to understand biomechanics and the pathomechanics of the human body and how this may influence posture and/or potential injury.  I had the opportunity to gain knowledge about Postural Restoration through speaking engagements given by Ron Hruska during my undergraduate years which further led me to acquire a clinical rotation at the Hruska Clinic while in Physical Therapy school. After my clinical affiliation I was then hired by the Hruska Clinic as a Staff Physical Therapist.

I have been involved in Sports Medicine at the collegiate level and continue this effort through consultations with the University of Nebraska and various club sports.  Professionally, I have a strong interest in postural asymmetry as it relates to lumbo-pelvic dysfunction as well as temporalmandibular dysfunction.  I take part in various speaking engagements at the local and national level educating physical therapists, athletic trainers and sports performance professionals about Postural Restoration.  The realization and uniqueness of Postural Restoration has led me to earn the designation of Postural Restoration Certified (PRC) through the Postural Restoration Institute™ (PRI) .  This designation has led to educating and consulting with a network of physical therapists, athletic trainers, dentists, and other allied health care professionals across the country.

On a personal level, I enjoy the outdoors, sports and cooking. I live in Lincoln with my boxers, Bella and Bronx.  When not working, you can usually find us at the lake, enjoying the great outdoors and our time away from the city.

Grant and I

My name is and I am one of the physical therapists here at Hruska Clinic.  I feel quite lucky to be a part of this staff as I consider the people I work with to be among the best in our profession.  More than that, the people I work with are like family, which creates a great work environment.

My journey towards becoming a physical therapist is not very typical as I was 31 years old when I returned to college, and 35 when I began my Doctorate of Physical Therapy education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.  Prior to this, I grew up on a farm in the middle of Iowa.  After high school, I had aspirations of becoming an architect, so I moved to Lincoln in 1986 where I attended classes at the University of Nebraska.  After about two years I realized that this was not the career path for me, so I entered the blue-collar work force, holding a variety of jobs from factory work to construction, as well as working ten years for the local gas utility company.  Shortly after turning 30 I decided I was ready for a career change where I could make a difference in people’s lives.  With my wife’s encouragement and support, I returned to college to become a physical therapist.

For the next 5 years I worked full-time and took night classes at both Southeast Community College and the University of Nebraska.  During this time, I had a need for physical therapy myself, and having heard about the Hruska Clinic, began treatment.  I was so impressed with the care I received that I knew this was where I wanted to work.  Fortunately, about the time I was getting ready to graduate, there was a need for an additional therapist here, and I was offered the opportunity to join the staff, practice PRI and really make a difference for my patients.  I have enjoyed my time here immensely, and can’t imagine working anywhere else (click here to read my blog).

On a personal note, my wife Elaine and I were married in 1995.  In July of 2009, our son Grant was born and he has been the highlight of our lives. Also, we have two cats that think they’re our kids as well. Elaine is the co-owner of a small software development company that she runs from home while also raising our little boy.

Lori Thomsen, MPT, PRC

Lori Thomsen
Here I am, swimming with the dolphins in Mexico

I graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1992 and the University Nebraska Medical Center in 1995.  Upon graduation from PT school I had a strong interest in working with the geriatric population through rehabilitation centers and home health care.  It wasn’t until I moved to North Dakota that I was introduced to the coursework through the Postural Restoration Institute™ (PRI).  This refreshing and integrative approach developed by Ron Hruska not only helped my patients with better outcomes, but also helped me personally with chronic hip pain.  I am an avid runner and dealt with pain for five years in my hip.  Traditional physical therapy treated the symptoms and provided short term relief, PRI treated my problem and is the only reason I continue to be able to run today.
I earned the designation of Postural Restoration Certified (PRC) in 2005 through PRI and became Associate Faculty in 2008 and Faculty in 2010 teaching courses through PRI across the country.  I developed the newest course offered through the Institute, Pelvic Floor Restoration, in 2010 with the help of Heather Engelbert, PT, PRC.
Professionally, I am passionate about teaching PRI to other healthcare professionals and working with my patients with this unique approach.  I do have a strong interest in runners, scoliosis, pelvic floor dysfunction, and vision/vestibular integration.  I am challenged everyday working with complex cases from Lincoln, the surrounding areas, and across the country.  I am humbled that exercises created in the Hruska Clinic are getting taught through PRI and given to other professionals to provide for their patients.  I am invigorated to work with colleagues that dare to ask the question “why?” and try to figure out the complex human body.  I am refreshed to work with other health professionals to assist my patients with better outcomes when needed.
Personally, I am married with two spoiled beagle dogs, Shauney and Betsy.  I have completed many marathons and half-marathons and enjoy hitting the trails with my family and friends.  I enjoy reading, traveling, cheering on the Huskers, church, and spending time with my family.

My brother Jason and I - GO BIG RED!

I like to believe that everything happens for a reason.  So, after experiencing countless injuries throughout my high school and college golf career, I knew something good would come of it. As a result of my injuries and rehabilitation, I was inspired to become a physical therapist.

I was first introduced to Ron Hruska and the Hruska Clinic as a patient over 10 years ago! I personally continue to benefit from the integrative approach (podiatry, dental, vision, and physical therapy) that Postural Restoration provides. I am happy to say that I recently completed my first half-marathon relatively pain-free, and most definitely have a greater appreciation of working with runners! My exposure to Postural Restoration as a patient influenced my decision to attend physical therapy school and later return to the Hruska Clinic to complete a clinical rotation. As a result of the excellent education that I received from my clinical instructor, Lori Thomsen and the entire Hruska Clinic staff, I developed a strong passion for Postural Restoration and came to know that it would be the foundation of my career. I continue to have a strong passion for working with athletes of all ages, including runners, golfers and swimmers! In addition to treating patients in the clinic, I have begun assisting the Postural Restoration Institute with educational resource materials, course preparation, and providing clinical support for healthcare professionals and trainers around the country.

I have now been at the Hruska Clinic for almost two years and feel so fortunate to already have my dream job! I received my physical therapy education at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. During this time, I had the opportunity to serve as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer with the Rockhurst athletic teams. I received my undergraduate degree in Athletic Training from Nebraska Wesleyan University, where I also participated in golf.

My cat, Sonny and I love being back in Nebraska, close to family and home of the Cornhuskers. No matter what season, you will almost always find me at the Husker game! I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, playing sports, and trips to the lake during the summer.

Torin Berge, MPT

My wife Leslie, and sons Bailey, Carter and Quinn

My name is Torin Berge and I have the privilege to be the newest therapist at the Hruska Clinic.  I was born and raised in Colorado Springs, CO, attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks where I was a member of the Fighting Sioux swim team prior to attending Physical Therapy school there.  I graduated with my PT degree in 1999 and embarked on my career as a PT.  I felt early on that my experience in PT school was just the foundation of how to be a PT but never really answered the question “Why?” I wanted to know why certain people had dysfunction and pain, why certain people would succeed with PT and why some wouldn’t.  At my first job as an outpatient PT in Sioux City, IA I was lucky enough to work with a few PTs who strongly recommended PRI courses to me.  My first taste of PRI was a one-day Protonics in-service in late 2000 by James Anderson.  He was the first who could actually answer the question “why” and I was hooked.  I have since attended numerous PRI courses and have utilized it for as main treatment technique while working for Trinity Health in Minot, ND.  When the opportunity to work at the Hruska Clinic came up my wife Leslie, who is also a PT trained in PRI, and I decided that there is no better place to work to be able to treat patients as a whole person, to be able to answer their “why” questions, and be the type of PT that I aspire to be.  I look forward to the opportunity to grow and learn from some of the best PTs around.
On a more personal note I am married to my wife of 10 years, Leslie, who I met as a graduate assistant in the gross anatomy lab while in PT school.  It’s a long story, but yes, we met over a dead body.  She currently has been able to stay home and take care of our 3 boys, Carter, 5, Quinn, 3, and Bailey,1.  She has been a great support for me and is definitely the glue that holds our family together.  We enjoy spending time outside as a family whether at the zoo, on a bike ride, the lake, or just in the backyard.  We are excited to be joining the Hruska Clinic family and the Lincoln community as a whole.

Becky Fisher, Administrative Services Manager

Oscar and I enjoying a lovely fall day...

My name is Becky Fisher, and I am Administrative Services Manager for the Hruska Clinic.  I love my position because no two days are ever the same.  I get to meet our patients and help them with scheduling, answer their questions about the ever-complicated insurance process, and hopefully get to know a little about each one.  Maybe it will be the fact that you love to pick out the dark chocolate candy from our famous candy bowl.  Or maybe it will be that you just had your first grandchild.  Or that you are getting ready for a trip to England to visit your mother.  Whatever it is, I really enjoy this part of my day.  I can also be found working on patient accounts, doing payroll, changing a light bulb, or maybe compiling monthly reports.  My job is to make every day run smoothly here, and to make sure each of our patients has a great experience with us.

I first met Ron Hruska in 1990, when I applied for a position as physical therapy office supervisor.  After I received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, I had worked in retail management for a few years, and decided it was time for a change.  A friend of mine at Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center told me about this position, and more importantly about Ron.  He told me I would never regret working with Ron, and I never have.  Ron hired me, I think after he found out I grew up in Norfolk and had six brothers and sisters (Ron has a soft spot for big families, as he is the eldest of 13!).  About nine years later, Ron decided to open his own practice, and I welcomed the opportunity to help him open the doors of the Hruska Clinic in April, 1999.  On a personal note, I have an adorable yellow lab, Oscar, who loves peanut butter, and me!  I am the happiest when I am near the ocean, and when I am traveling and seeing the world. In addition to many beautiful places here in the States, I have been fortunate enough to have gone to Mexico, Ireland, England, Italy, and recently added France to the list.  I also love my two dogs Oscar and Oliver, interior design, spending time with my family, and planning my next trip!
