Dentistry
Most people believe that teeth are for chewing, and as long as they have a perfect smile, they will be okay. Dentistry should not be considered to be treatment of the teeth alone; however integration between an orthodontist and a PRI physical therapist will address other body influences that may have a direct impact on one’s bite. The teeth are part of the jaw, the jaw is part of the head, and the head is part of the body. They all function in harmony and when one body part is out of balance it affects the other parts, resulting in a discomfort occurring in a different part of the body from the actual site of the problem. The aim of consulting with a PRI physical therapist is to formulate a treatment plan which will restore balance and harmony throughout the head and neck as well as the rest of the body. One of the body’s main functions is to breathe. If the upper jaw is too small, the nasal passage is reduced in size. Likewise if the lower jaw is too far back, the flow of air is also inhibited. To overcome this jaw position, the body compensates and the head is postured forward. The rest of the body then has to accommodate to this compensated forward head posture. Often times this is what gives individuals their slouch and their inability to breathe properly with their diaphragm. Their shoulders will be hunched forward, their spine will be bent and the pelvis will be pushed forward. This posture will often lead to lower back problems, pain between the shoulder blades, neck pain, headaches, and last but not least, jaw pain. Working with a PRI physical therapist will restore proper body position to ensure proper cranial and jaw function.
