Swimming

Swimming is unique for several reasons. First, it is highly dependant upon technique. The force necessary to pull the hand through the water is not great; however, body position, drag, buoyancy, endurance and stroke technique are all factors that contribute largely to swimming ability. Second, swimming provides upper-body and lower-body strength as well as cardiovascular fitness. Among competitive swimmers, shoulder discomfort is the most common complaint; however the cause may be related to poor pelvic mechanics and/or improper breathing techniques. Consultation with a PRI physical therapist will address the coordinated movements between the upper and lower body structures as well as proper breathing mechanics. Often times muscles work at the wrong time for the wrong reasons most often because of the body being in the wrong position. Working with a PRI physical therapist will provide the swimmer with the proper integration between the upper and lower body segments as well as allow for proper diaphragmatic breathing.
